17-12-2018 Cyrille Regis remembered by Viv Anderson

9 February 1958 – 14 January 2018The former England defender recalls his friend, a formidable opponent, skilled striker and ‘legend of the English game’• Elyse Dodgson remembered by April de Angelis• Read the Observer’s obituaries of 2018 in full hereCyrille was genuinely the most lovely, mild-mannered and pleasant man I have ever known. At least until he got on the pitch. When you played against him, he was an absolute beast. Challenging him was like hitting a brick wall. He was so powerful: great in the air, very quick, with two good feet and an eye for goal. He had everything you could want in a centre-forward, he ticked all the boxes. He played for West Brom while I was at Nottingham Forest. We were local rivals and both had good teams at the time, so we had a lot of games, real ding-dong battles. We came across each other all the time. The game I really remember, though, was one I didn’t play in: an FA Cup quarter-final in 1978. I was suspended that day so was watching from the stands, and he scored an absolute screamer as they beat us 2-0. I remember it like it was yesterday. What a player he was on his day. 17-12-2018 What ‘masculinity’ means when you’re gay, bi or trans …

We’re in the middle of a ‘genderquake’ where the qualities traditionally associated with men are changing daily. So how do three LGBT guys define manliness in 2018? By Joe StoneWhat does it mean to be a man? Right now, masculinity is under the microscope like never before. But one group that is used to navigating the tricky terrain of gender norms is the LGBT community. In a recent survey by Attitude, Britain’s best-selling gay magazine, 69% of readers admitted they’d been made to feel “less of a man” because they are gay, bisexual or queer. More troubling still, 41% said that at some point they themselves thought that they were less of a man too. Continue reading...

17-12-2018 Eden Hazard ensures Chelsea stay in touch at top with win at Brighton

Eden Hazard departed this contest with a grimace seven minutes from time, his right ankle still smarting from the damage inflicted moments earlier by Dale Stephens’ unpunished challenge. The Belgian has grown used to taping on the ice packs in the dugout, and would rip the joint free once the final whistle had blown, but at least he could be warmed by the knowledge he had inflicted wounds of his own on the opposition. This had been Hazard at his mesmeric best, one of those displays where defenders seem hypnotised by his skill and shrink at his every involvement, the ball seemingly glued to his instep as he scuttles at pace through massed ranks of markers. The first tackle tends to leave him hobbling these days but, like a footballing Gordon Greenidge, he is at his most dangerous when the limp is established and the adrenaline is flowing. For an hour Brighton & Hove Albion had no answer. It was to their credit that they rallied late-on to make the closing stages so uncomfortable for Chelsea after what had initially threatened to be a saunter. Continue reading...

Fly-half remains philosophical about his England exile and is enjoying his new leadership role at GloucesterIf Danny Cipriani feels messed around by England he hides it well. You might expect confusion, resentment, even betrayal at how he again finds himself on the outside looking in after the briefest of comebacks over the summer but on a chilly afternoon in Gloucestershire there is nothing but positivity from the exiled fly-half.To recap, Cipriani made his first England start in 10 years in their first win in six matches in June but was discarded again for the autumn campaign.
